the trap – dom & roland the only -dat- master copy of this track was lost 20 years ago in 1997 somewhere between dom s studio and music house in holloway road. dom has been searching for this holy grail of -amen choppage- since, the only reference to it a crusty recording of a grooverider show from 1998. at various points there have been glimmers of hope of the wearabouts of the track in its entirety, with much excitement from avid followers who have given -the trap- a status akin to a cult classic film. many years, rifled sheds, boxes and lofts later, the breakthrough everyone is waiting for happens. it is christmas 2016 and a subversive character from australia sends in the full original quality version, recorded from dat tape, to dom & roland productions hq. after a full going over in dom’s lab and a wonderful new mastering job by beau at 1087 the amen legend known only as -the trap- is ready to be unleashed. swarm – dom & roland depending on who you ask the dubplate of this track from 1996 was called dark skies or the swarm. one of the first tracks to feature dom s reworked alternating clean and distorted -flow break- which later went on to become a layer in dom s famous -tramen- break. swarm features the switch from light to dark dom has become famous for. featuring one of the largest mentasm basses ever cut on a record alongside the -subway- thump bass that dom later used when producing the -ed rush hit record- of the same name. it has remained an exclusive gem in dom s vaults until now. originally only cut on plate by the a list of metalheadz blue note, this blueprint of bass is finally seeing a release this year. dj play: aphex twin, amon tobin, fabio, grooverider, peshay, loxi, andy c, break, fierce, doc scott, dbridge, goldie, ant tc1, gridlok, marcus intalex, sb81, ulterior motive, noisia

ant plates vinyl only ventures continue unabated, taking a break from the yse saint laur ant releases and turning to minus the majors instead. whether its just plate in another one of his guises or not is unclear, but the music certainly fits in with the more exploratory, downtempo nature of previous vinyl only releases. he looked is an especially funky number that revolves around crafty beats and warm moog-esque synth ripples. things get more broken on jizz jazz, and then drongo manages to go even further out to sea in its quest for the perfect balance between funk and freakiness.

ypy is the work of osaka based koshiro hino. having recently released on labels such as nous, his own label birdfriend, and the legendary em records koshiro now presents the 7 track lp 2020 for where to now? records. the lp leads with the slow building, off kilter title track 2020,where flurries of eastern horns skitter beneath evolving layers of wonked yet beautifully balanced percussive movements, coming off like a technoid homage to the fourth world works of eno & hassel. as is the case with much of hinos music, as the piece develops it takes on heavier and heavier modes of experimentation and excitement turbines whirr and fizz alongside layers and layers of percussion, constantly teetering on the edge of no-wave breakdown whilst never losing sight of the rhythmic backbone, recouping from every moment of collapse with total grace.

as yse saint laur ant, ant plate (one half of ever productive duo rhythm plate) takes some time out from crafting refined deep house music to indulge his more wayward tendencies. amongst the music coming to light in this intriguing diversion from a prolific artist is the fantastic just because, which comes on like early wagon christ material with a modern production sheen. space is defunct meanwhile slaps down some chugging 80s flavoured grooves, 2106 reaches for the boogie and dont make me think channels a laid back balearic mindset. it s a mixed bag of a record, make no mistake. that s also what makes it marvelous.

sonic groove delivers a 4 track e.p. from new artist ( hailing from the u.s. and currently based and operating in berlin) blush response. following his recent releases on ant-zen and aufnahme+wiedergabe with a 4 track e.p. of experimental industrial dark technoid explorations that are cutting the edge of contemporary techno with an expert approach to the dissemination of sonic architecture.

the vinyl only label comes from ant plate (of rhythm plate notoriety), and following some turns from ant himself as yse saint laur ant the label branches out to welcome brand new entity (or quite possibly alias) bubbadog to the playing field. the quality of the music eschews any notions of who did what, as the tumbling latin tones of -alma- meet with the laid-back, handclap-heavy bliss of -threshold-. -boodoo- on the flip deals in a more peppy kind of offbeat house, and then -talkin talkin - and -harry- drop down into a classic bit of funk breaks business.

tx connects gavin guthrie is a horror soundtrack enthusiast and regularly djs gigs with that premise. so its no surprise that hed produce an ep that implements these themes.the t.r.u. halloween ep is a special edition ep that collects and compiles 5 tracks from gavins inner circle that range from 80s era horror soundtrack chase scene music to dark techno. with the recent surgence of survive and stranger things, this ep fits right in the pocket and is slated for a halloween 2016 release.

while suspended in gaffa is a debuting name, the members are by no means newcomers. they sport an extensive past together as hinsidan, known for releasing albums on phisteria and remixing asche on ant-zen. further back, suspended in gaffas casper holm was member of the legendary post-punk band before. while dsm s early teenage years recordings as the product were re-released on vinyl a couple of years ago on the prominent us label dark entries.

toolbox is so proud of this wax. i discover somatic responses with their very first ep on cfet, and i still dig for any of their music. whatever it was with cavage, with ant-zen or with dbn. but its true to say techno became more and more rare with them. and this time we hang on with four unrealesed techno and hardcore tunes from somatic responses! the sound is just acid and crazy of course, but this is not oldschool, this is music, probably the best musical ep on acid night.
